DayZ Badlands Sickness: Heatstroke and Dust Cures

Survive DayZ Badlands sickness on Nasdara: heatstroke stages, silicosis, eye grit, cholera from bad water, and the cures that work.

Why DayZ Badlands Sickness Kills Fresh Spawns

Nasdara does not wait for you to find a gun. The sun cooks you in the open, sandstorms fill your lungs, and the nearest drink can be the thing that makes you vomit. DayZ Badlands sickness is the main reason fresh spawns die of natural causes on this map, often before they ever see another player. Treat every DayZ Badlands sickness as its own problem: heatstroke, silicosis, grit in your eyes, and cholera do not share a cure, and the wrong pill just wastes meds you needed later.

Bohemia's launch notes, echoed on Bohemia Interactive's official DayZ site, put the threat in the air itself: nonstop sun, and wind that builds into sandstorms. Water is scarce, and you need it twice, once to drink and again to cool your skin and rinse your eyes. Players who only "drink more" still collapse when the second job never gets done.

Four problems show up in the first hours. Blur, coughing, vomiting, and fading vision overlap on screen, but they are not one status effect.

SilicosisBreathing dust during a sandstormNoLeave the dust, then recover with solid immunity
Eye irritationGrit driven into your eyesNoWash face; eyewear only slows the buildup

The mechanics below come from Bohemia's public descriptions and from the 1.30 game scripts Bohemia ships. Those scripts were checked against the September experimental branch, so the stable launch may nudge a few timings. Where a claim comes from early footage instead of the scripts, it is marked as player experience or community reports.

Heatstroke Stages and How to Cool Off

Heatstroke is the DayZ Badlands sickness most survivors meet before their first storm, and it is not an infection. A thermometer will not flag it, because that tool only reports a fever. In the 1.30 scripts the illness is a hidden heat value. It climbs while you overheat and falls once you cool down. The temperature icon is the warning light, and hydration decides how fast that value may rise.

While the icon stays in the warm yellow band, a well-watered character does not build heat at all. Someone only about half hydrated can stall at stage one. Fall short of water, or let the icon go red, and the value climbs anyway.

StageWhat you noticeWhy it snowballs
1Almost nothingYou are already sweating water away
2Blur, weaker stamina, heat animations or soundsYou stay in the sun and keep losing fluid
3VomitingFood, water, and stamina all drop
4Fading vision, health loss, short blackoutsPassing out in direct sun often ends the life

There is no pill. Cooling and drinking are the whole cure, and the scripts reward both. Get out of the hot range first: a building, real shade, or the lighter clothes made for Nasdara. Once the icon leaves the hot band, the hidden value drains on its own, but slowly. From the fainting stage, waiting alone takes a long time. If you are already blacking out, reach cover before you drink. Unconscious in the open sun is how this turns fatal.

Keep drinking while you cool off. Hot plus dehydrated is the fastest climb back up. Do not assume that vomit is cholera. Stage-three heatstroke empties your stomach even when every sip came from a well.

Wash your face at a well, any body of water, or with a bottle in hand. One wash cuts the heat buildup about as much as half an hour in the shade, and it wets clothes around your head and face. It then freezes that buildup for about 30 seconds. During the freeze the value cannot rise, but extra washes will not lower it either. Wash once, wait half a minute, then wash again.

A separate wet-clothing action also works. Hold a garment at a well or the water's edge and soak it. That lowers the buildup too, and it still works outside the 30-second lock.

Player experience matches the shade rule, even if early guides described the sun more loosely. Community reports say any break in line of sight, a tree, a rock, the space under a bridge, or a building interior, stops the climb, and staying there lets the sickness decay. Crafting, eating, or sorting gear in the open is how stage one becomes stage four. Step under cover first.

Clothing matters more here than on Chernarus. Lower insulation builds heat more slowly, and high-absorbency pieces that can get fully drenched make the wash trick stronger. Community reports say dirty water is safe for washing your face and will not give you a disease. Save clean water for drinking, and stop once your clothes hit maximum wetness so you do not empty a bottle for nothing.

Silicosis, Eye Grit, and What Counts as Shelter

Silicosis is the sandstorm illness, and it is the DayZ Badlands sickness players ask about most in the first week. While the storm is on you, dust goes into your lungs and grit toward your eyes at a rate tied to how hard the storm is hitting your head. You cough in the storm, then breathe heavily as silicosis stacks. Stamina falls. Stay in the dust and you lose health. At the far end your vision fades and you pass out.

Nothing in a medical pile treats it directly. Antibiotics do not touch it. Out of the dust, your body clears silicosis on its own, but only while immunity is in decent shape. DayZ builds immunity from health, blood, food, and water. A fed, hydrated survivor recovers. A starving one stays stuck. It also does not fade while you are unconscious.

The practical cure is shelter, food, water, bandages, and time. Vitamins push immunity to the top tier for five minutes, enough to start recovery when your stats are a mess. Shelter rules are stricter than they look.

PlaceStops new silicosis?Catch
Interior under a roofYesThe game wants both a roof and an interior
Porch, carport, or open ruinUsually noA common reason you got sick "indoors"
Bunker or tunnelYesDepth shuts the storm out and blocks the sun
Seated inside a carYesA motorbike never counts, however fast you ride
Tree shade in the openNoHelps heatstroke only

In the open, a face wrap, shemagh, or dust mask with dust protection cuts how much you inhale and how hard you cough. Glasses or goggles cover your eyes. Exact protection numbers sit in packed game data, so treat your best mask as time bought, not a reason to stay outside. Bohemia's gear notes point to face wraps, shemaghs, and dust masks. Community reports add a gas mask with a filter, plus goggles or a motorbike helmet for the eyes. One player account figured a green filter lost about 30 percent across a half-hour storm when they removed it indoors. Pull the filter off only when you are truly sheltered.

Eye grit is separate. The rinse-your-eyes line from Bohemia is this condition, not silicosis. The overlay is what the game files call eye veins. At a well or a pond, each wash face cuts the irritation about in half, so two or three passes clear it. A bottle removes only a sliver per wash. The effect also fades after you leave the sand, if you are healthy enough for the same recovery rule as silicosis.

If you are coughing or the veins are up, get into a real interior, a car, or underground. You cannot outrun a storm that eventually covers the map. Community reports put the length around 20 to 40 minutes, longer near the map edge where it started, though those times were still being tested. Rising wind and a cloud wall on the horizon are the warning. Pick a road before visibility dies. Infected and animals do not die in the dust. Players say they notice you less, so stumbling into zombies or dogs while half blind and out of stamina is a real risk.

Cholera, Wells, and the Water That Looks Safe

Not every DayZ Badlands sickness comes from the sky. Irrigation tunnels are a headline feature, and they sit beside wells as structures you can rebuild. The scripts are picky about drinking. Well water is safe. Drink by hand from any other surface and the game adds cholera to that sip, every time. Whether tunnel water uses that unsafe type is an educated reading of the code, not a label in the files, so treat standing water down there as unsafe until you process it.

Cholera looks like fever, blurred vision, fast water loss, and vomiting that also burns food. That vomit overlaps heatstroke stage three. Check a thermometer: fever points to infection, because heatstroke does not register as one. Tetracycline clears cholera, and the 1.30 scripts give it no resistance. Vitamins help your immune system at the same time.

Pond, stream, or tunnel surfaceNoWash only, or treat it first

Community routes for hour one are consistent. Stay in the northern, lower-tier half of the map, where food and drinks spawn more generously than in the south. Water trucks show up more often than other dynamic events, so loot towns that can roll those spawns before you plan a personal well. Rebuilding a well is a geared-team job, sites are often far from spawn, and a fresh character will not gather the parts. Once built, anyone can use it, and for now it does not decay unless the server wipes. Community reports say the developers have mentioned decay later, so do not treat today's wells as permanent.

Player guides cite two ropes and 50 short sticks to ladder down to an underground stream, and the same materials if you need a way back up. Boil that water for at least a minute, add a purification tablet (chlorine tablets show up in the same player advice), or take vitamins while you digest it. For the OKB crater, community reports conflict about drinking safety, and the specific contamination type is unconfirmed. Do not treat a transcript or the underground-test lore as proof of cholera or of the absence of heavy metals. Use a confirmed safe source instead.

Keep one simple split. Clean water is for drinking. Dirty water is for your face and your clothes.

What to Do Before the Next Sandstorm

You will not beat every DayZ Badlands sickness with one habit. Stack the ones that cover the most deaths, in this order.

PriorityDo thisDo not do this
1Drink from a well or a water truckSip raw tunnel or pond water
2Shade up at the first heat warning and keep drinkingCraft, eat, or loot-sort in direct sun
3Wear light clothes you can drench, and wet themSprint the desert in heavy insulated gear
4Carry a face covering and eyewearTreat a mask as full immunity
5Get into an interior, a car, or a tunnelTrust a porch, a ruin, or a motorbike
6Match the cure to the causeSpend tetracycline on heat or dust

Fever plus raw water means tetracycline. No fever, open sun, and vomiting means cool down. Coughing plus eye veins means shelter, food, and vitamins, not more pills. After you are safe, eat. Silicosis will not tick down on an empty survivor, and it will not tick down while you are knocked out.

If you host a community server, sandstorm frequency is the one piece you can tune without mods. Nasdara's gameplay config reads a multiplier: 0 disables storms, 0.5 halves them, 1.0 is normal, and 2.0 doubles them. The file only applies when gameplay-config loading is enabled, and the server needs a restart. There is no switch for heatstroke or silicosis. The closest lever is the monthly maximum-temperature list in that same file. Lowering it should make overheating less likely, but that effect has not been carefully measured. Of the official 1.30 missions, Chernarus, Livonia, Sakhal, and Nasdara, only Nasdara ships the sandstorm block. Pasting it onto another map will not create the weather.

Expect the curve to cost a few lives. Survivors who lock in water, shade, and real shelter skip most of the deaths that feel unavoidable on night one.

FAQ

Do antibiotics cure every DayZ Badlands sickness?

No. Tetracycline is for cholera, which the 1.30 scripts do not treat as resistant. Heatstroke and silicosis are not infections, so antibiotics do nothing for them. Vitamins still help, because they raise immunity while your body clears dust or fights bad water.

Why did I get sick while I was already indoors?

The storm check wants a roof and a building interior at the same time. A porch, a carport, or a ruined shell with missing walls can leave you exposed. If you drank from a tunnel or a pond, the illness may be cholera rather than silicosis.

Does a gas mask fully stop silicosis?

Not confirmed. The scripts look up a dust-protection value on each mask, and those numbers are packed where a normal read of the public scripts cannot see them. Use your best face covering, add eyewear, and still get to shelter. Player experience says filters drain fast if you leave them on for the whole storm.

Can these sandstorm illnesses hit you on Chernarus?

Bohemia describes sandstorms on Nasdara, and only that official mission includes the sandstorm settings. The weather is scripted there, so another map will not grow a sandstorm from a copied config block. Ordinary thirst and cholera still exist elsewhere, but heatstroke plus silicosis is a Badlands package.
